How people in our community LIVE UNITED
We are proud to have so many generous and caring people in Cambridge and North Dumfries. Read how they GIVE. BELIEVE. VOLUNTEER to LIVE UNITED in our community. Then, please share how you LIVE UNITED.
I believe I have lived united for most of my life. Living united in my opinion is being human. I believe being a good listener and giving someone a shoulder to cry on is equally as important. Sometimes we help without even knowing we have, just by being a good human being. We created a competition with ATS and together, raised 50,000 pounds of food for the food bank. I love humanity. Just some of us are lost.

I LIVE UNITED by donating thru my payroll deductions.
I LIVE UNITED thru food donations and I help out at work with our campaign.
I LIVE UNITED by generally trying to help out where and when I can.

I work for a United Way partner agency and up until the time I started working there, I did not realize the great need, or the wealth of resources in this community.
Through my employment, I have the opportunity to give back such as clothing donations, the Giving Tree at Christmas time or through donations to the United Way. That’s how I LIVE UNITED.

I’m the warehouse manager of the Food Bank. I am responsible for all food coming in and being distributed to 32 agencies. I also look after the building repairs and upkeep. I have the challenge of the job and the self satisfaction. Working here has opened my eyes as to how the recession has affected our community.

I am a Community Outreach worker at the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank. I support families with children from 0-18. I help them find resources to empower them to help themselves. I am also a Roots of Empathy instructor and Manchester Public School.

I remember that every person should be treated with dignity, respect and kindness.
I remember that people respond better to a smile and a handshake than to a sneer.
I remember what it feels like to see myself as a failure, and how very wrong I ended up being.
Mark
I started off five years ago as a United Way assistant/helper. Now for the past three years I have been running the campaign.

As a partner agency of the United Way, we see the benefits of the campaign daily. Those families who access our programs have a voice, a safe place to come, and people they can rely on. Our neighborhood is united. We come together to help each other everyday.
We’re able to do what we do at the Centre because of the United Way.

As our branch Employee Campaign Coordinator, I am part of my United Way workplace campaign. I help with planning, boosting and collecting the pledge cards. It has been my fourth year. It makes me feel good to be able to help people and organizations that are in great need.

I am an Employee Campaign Coordinator for Scotiabank, entering my third fundraising year. My husband and I help clear snow for our neighbors during the winter. Also, we bake Christmas treats and share with neighbors. We donate used books and clothes to school fundraisers (winter coats, hats, mittens etc). We volunteered for years at Public School reading programs and head lice checks.

With the help of the United Way…”together” we make a difference in the lives of learners with literacy concerns. At the Literacy Group of Waterloo Region, at both the Cambridge and Kitchener location, we are helping over 500 learners read, write, and enhance their computer skills. We help those who do not have the ability to enter simple GED programs and prepare them for additional education, enhancement in employment opportunities, along with many other individual goals. Thank you for your support and we will do our best to give back in the 2009 campaign. LIVE UNITED!!

We run a company campaign. Running for one week. Raise money for United Way through company payroll. Through that one week we have games and lunch and at the end of the week we have one grand prize draw for those who made a donation to the United Way.

Our company is very small right now. We have nine core employees and seven part-time employees. I decided to be an Employee Campaign Coordinator because I wanted to learn what United Way was all about. I have learned so much over the last couple of years and truly am proud to help out a great cause.

Having a daughter who is hearing impaired has taught me personally that not everyone is treated equally. By working with the United Way, it is my hope to make our community a better place so that everyone can LIVE UNITED.
Barry
I LIVE UNITED by donating clothes, shoes and food to regular drives.
I also LIVE UNITED by being the United Way Employee Campaign Coordinator within my company’s branch. I have had the privilege to give out Christmas baskets to families who can’t afford to buy gifts for their children. I have donated money to families chosen by the business to raise money for them after trauma.

Part of what makes a great community is when everyone gives something no matter how great or small. In the past I have LIVED UNITED by being on school councils and by coaching t-ball teams. Now I LIVE UNITED by being a blockparent, by volunteering at the shelter and by being a leadership donor. Everyone is affected when one is helped.

I LIVE UNITED by making sure that every day, I do something to give back to this community that has been so good to me. Whether it be a monetary donation to an organization I believe in, volunteering with something I am passionate about (like Kiwanis) or simply just holding the door for a stranger...every day I try to do something to make this community a better place. That’s what it means to me to LIVE UNITED.

I LIVE UNITED. I BELIEVE in the importance of community and the very real results that community organizations and United Way achieve together, to help people who need help today while also building a stronger community for everyone for tomorrow. Because of this, I invest in my community: I GIVE to United Way as a leadership donor, and I VOLUNTEER on the board of directors of a not-for-profit organization. I GIVE. I BELIEVE. I VOLUNTEER. I LIVE UNITED.
Kris Cummings

I LIVE UNITED through my volunteer involvement with the United Way Campaign Cabinet, as I believe in the work of the United Way as they help by opening so many doors for the people in our community! I also volunteer in my community making apple dumplings every Saturday morning to help with the restoration efforts of my church."
Cheryl Buer Cartwright
“One way I LIVE UNITED is through my volunteer role on the United Way Campaign Cabinet. In addition to this, I also organized, promoted, and staged the first ever United Way Strength Challenge, a charity strongman competition, to raise funds and food donations for the local United Way and Food Bank. In tough times like these, donating to the United Way is the best way to help those in our community who really need it.”
Luke Skaarup
“I LIVE UNITED by a strong belief in giving back to a community and a country that have been very good to me. I am blessed to be able to balance a love for sports and business by volunteering for United Way, coaching community soccer, and most recently completing the 2 day / 200km Ride to Conquer Cancer.”
Lars Wunsche
"I LIVE UNITED by volunteering at my son’s school to raise money for their school yard playground project to enable a stimulating, safe and ’green’ space for my children to play in; and through raising resources to give people a hand up in my community through my job with United Way."
Heidi Duarte
"I LIVE UNITED through my work at United Way by raising funds and resources for those in need in our community. I also sit on the Board of Directors for the Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise. Each year I work with Rotarians to identify needs in this community, and to roll up our sleeves and use our ‘elbow grease’ as well as our financial support to help Cambridge…all in the spirit of Rotary International’s motto: Service Above Self."
Jen Loker
"As a parent of two young children, I understand the need for valuable services and organizations in the community. One never knows when you could find yourselves on the receiving end. By working for United Way and Volunteering with The Twin City Optimists Club, I feel a special sense of pride in knowing that the services these organizations provide are precious gifts that I am a part of. "
I GIVE, I BELIEVE, I VOLUNTEER, I LIVE UNITED!
