People are Economically Secure

Disparity in income levels and poverty carry a high price for our entire community. They cause people to lose hope and put a strain on individuals and families who shoulder an unrealistic burden. United Way works with various partners to invest in solutions that address the roots of economic challenges, helping break the cycle of poverty for future generations, while supporting our fellow community members who need help now. Your investment helps people who need this kind of help and support. See a complete list of the programs that your investment supports or  check out our Priority Sheet on Economically Secure Inititatives.

Here are some specific examples of how your investment is helping:

Welcome Aboard Drop-In Centre - Cambridge Shelter Corporation

80% of clients began to use their case plan to move forward within three months, and over 50% began to set goals for themselves within six months.

60% of clients were significantly connected to iancommunity supports within three months, and nearly 50% were able to retain their housing within three months of accessing the drop-in centre.

Client Success Story

“MY WRITING IS BEING READ ACROSS CANADA!” When Patty first came to the Literacy Group of Waterloo Region in Cambridge, she said she was stupid and never accomplished anything. She worked on her writing skills and published her short story in our newsletter. A provincial literacy organization, Laubach Literacy Ontario, saw it and asked to have it published in an e-magazine circulated throughout Ontario. Then, National Adult Literacy saw it and asked to post it on their website. This is a significant achievement for a young woman who is able to use her newfound confidence and skills in many different ways.
